Tony Daley

Wing Wizard Tony Daley was a Birmingham boy who joined Aston Villa as an apprentice and made his senior debut for his hometown club aged just 17 in a 2-0 loss to Southampton on the 20th April 1985. He went on to play for Villa for ten years being involved in the side which finished runner up in the league twice in the early nineties. The peak of his Villa career though was lifting the league cup in 1994 when they beat Fergie’s treble winning Manchester United 3-1 in the final.

Tony Daley made 233 appearances for Villa scoring 31 times.

During his time at Aston Villa, Tony Daley was capped 7 times for England under his former club manager Graham Taylor making his debut on 13th November 1991 when coming on as a sub in a 1-1 draw with Poland that saw England qualify for the 1992 European Championships.

Daley was named in the squad which travelled to Sweden for the competition and played in two of England only 3 games of the competition.

Though he did not play for England again Daley continued to play and perform at Villa in a memorable side that include McGrath, Townsend, Dean Saunders, Dalian Atkinson and many more memorable Villa names.

After a glittering Villa career, Daley left to join up with his former manager Graham Taylor at Wolverhampton Wanderers but his career was blighted by injury.

Four years later he again joined Taylor, this time at Watford but again struggled to hold down a regular place due to injury. He went on to play for Walsall and Forest green rovers before hanging up his boots and pursuing a career in coaching.
